Head of Colombian Football Association arrested in chaos at Copa America

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida. – Ramón Jesurún, the president of the Colombian Football Federation, was arrested in the middle of a chaotic night at the Copa America soccer tournament in Miami Gardens.

Jesurún, president of the Colombian Football Association and vice president of CONMEBOL, the organization that organizes the Copa America, is accused of two counts of assault on a specific official or employee.

The 71-year-old is also a member of the FIFA Council, a “strategic control body” of the world football association.

According to prison records, Jesurún was admitted to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center shortly after 4:15 a.m. Monday after Colombia lost 1-0 to Argentina in the final.

According to a police report from the Miami-Dade Police Department, Jesurún and his son, 43-year-old Ramón Jamil Jesurún, are accused of fighting with several security guards who were blocking people from entering a tunnel where media representatives gathered around 12:20 a.m. on Monday after the game.

Father and son became “angry” at a security guard and began yelling at him, police said. The police report said the altercation turned physical after a security guard ordered the men to step back “by yelling in the guard’s face” and placed a hand on the younger Jesurún’s chest to “pull him back.”

That prompted the elder Jesurún to step forward and shove the guard, police said; his son then grabbed the guard by the neck and punched him. The guard was later taken to Jackson North Medical Center in North Miami Beach, according to the arrest report.

Both men are accused of subsequently fighting with other security forces who tried to break up the confrontation.

A video shared by Colombian media company Publimetro via Fox Sports Mexico is said to show the brawl.

Both father and son were scheduled to appear in Miami-Dade bail court on Monday afternoon. Both are listed in arrest reports as residents of a condominium in the Brickell neighborhood of Miami.

The two were initially both arrested on three counts of assault on a specific public official or employee. The charge was later reduced to two because a judge did not see sufficient suspicion for a third charge.

The younger Jesurún also faces charges of assault.

According to jail records, bail for Ramon Jesurún was set at $2,000, while a judge set bail for Ramón Jamil Jesurún at $4,000.
