Nottingham (UK): West Indies coach Andre Coley has urged his players to take inspiration from their win against Australia at the Gabba to level their ongoing series against England.

Chasing their first Test victory in England since 1988, the West Indies were crushed in the series opener. Ben Stokes’ team made James Anderson’s final game unforgettable by securing an innings-114-run victory.

Their start is similar to that against Australia in January. In the first Test of the two-match series, Australia outclassed the Caribbean side with a 10-wicket win in Adelaide.

The West Indies responded with a historic 8-run win at the Gabba, with Shamar Joseph shining with the red ball, taking seven scalps in the second innings.

Ahead of the second Test against England at Trent Bridge on Thursday, Coley wants to instill confidence in his players that they can orchestrate a decisive game in the series at Edgbaston.

“They could have taken a lot of positives from that. As far as the way we were able to bounce back, I think the process we went through to get there is much more important (than the result),” Coley said, according to ESPNcricinfo.

“It highlights the fact that you can actually start a series not well and then pull yourself together and come back in the series and be pretty competitive so it potentially comes down to a decider in the third game. So there are real positives to take away, not just from the first Test here but from what would have happened to us over the last six months,” he added.

Despite the crushing defeat in the first Test, Coley believes there are many positives to take from the game.

“We admit that our team is young and still developing… but we are still very optimistic about our approach to the second Test. Everyone is in good spirits. We have had one-on-one discussions with the players and this will really be the first time we are solid as a team,” he said.

“There has been quite a lot of activity on and off the field before the first Test and I can imagine some of our players have had a lot to take in. So it has been a massive learning experience for everyone, players and staff, and we remain very positive as we head to Nottingham,” added Coley.
