Who is Sabrina Carpenter? The US singer and actress moves from Disney to Barry Keoghan via Taylor Swift

After supporting Taylor Swift on her “Eras” tour, Sabrina Carpenter is now on her way to superstardom.

The US singer and actress is now following Swift’s example and plunging herself into a potentially high-profile romance – the 24-year-old has been spotted with Irish actor Barry Keoghan.

However, her career is more similar to that of other former child actresses such as Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande, as all three are now successful adults.

The future looks bright – but now that her performance on The Eras tour has come to an end, she is in the mood to reflect on her achievements so far.

“I’m sitting at home thinking about what a whirlwind this was and how honored I am to have been a part of it,” she wrote about her experience on social media.

“I would like to thank everyone for their warm and generous reception and for making some of the most impressive friendship bracelets I have ever received.”

After visiting the Eventim Apollo in London with her “Emails I Can’t Send” tour last year, it might not be long before she is headlining stadium tours herself.

This is how Carpenter went from being a lively teenager to being in the fast lane and at the top.

Disney Beginnings

Born and home-schooled in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, Carpenter is not related to the Carpenters but does have a famous aunt: Simpsons legend Nancy Cartwright.

After making a name for herself as a singer on YouTube, she was selected to participate in The Next Miley Cyrus Project. Like Cyrus about a decade earlier, Carpenter starred in the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World.

The show wasn’t called Hannah Montana, but it was enough to get her noticed, and she signed a five-album deal before her 15th birthday. The power pop song Eyes Wide Open was her first hit – it opened her eponymous debut album and reached 79 million views on YouTube.

She balanced her fledgling acting career (including roles in the teen dramas “The Hate U Give” and “Tall Girl”) with music, releasing five increasingly mature albums in five years.

Love triangle with Olivia Rodrigo

Carpenter, now a seasoned connoisseur of the teen love story, found herself at the center of a love triangle that also involved her Disney Channel colleagues Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett.

The latter couple were together, but their relationship was on the rocks, and the lyrics of Rodrigo’s hit song “Drivers License” give a clue as to why.

“And you’re probably dating that blonde girl / That always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me, she’s everything I’m insecure about,” the 2020 song said.

Hmm. Rodrigo was 17 at the time and Carpenter was 21. The older of the two then released her single Skin, which began with the line: “Maybe ‘blonde’ was the only rhyme.”

The two later calmed the intense speculation in the media, with Rodrigo explaining that “Drivers License” could not be about Carpenter, whom she had never met.

Emails I can’t send

Next up for Carpenter was Emails I Can’t Send, her fifth album and the first to be a big hit in the UK, where fans devoured the dance-pop singles “Feather” and “Nonsense”.

A world tour followed, and during these shows she became known for ending “Nonsense” each time with a unique outro – usually specifically for the audience.

This got her into trouble when a performance on Radio 1’s Live Lounge ended with her singing: “How fast can you take your clothes off, surprise test. I’m American, I’m not British, so BBC stands for something else. This Live Lounge is so cool because I’m in it, right?”

Epoch tour

As the opening act for Taylor Swift, Carpenter played in stadiums in Latin America, Australia and Asia from August 2023 to March 2024.

The two worked together on stage and must have gotten along well, because Carpenter attended Swift’s 34th birthday party in December.

Romance with Barry Keoghan

After the Bassett fiasco, Carpenter kept her love life secret, but things changed when she made her relationship with Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan public at the Grammys.

The couple posed for their first photo together, with Keoghan playfully raising a hand to partially cover his face while Carpenter obscured her face with a cocktail glass.
