Rowan’s Marie Rader series announces performances for 2024-25

(GLASSBORO, NJ) — Drawing on a diverse offering of modern dance, musical theater, world music, jazz and contemporary choir, Marie Rader Lecture Series at Rowan University is pleased to announce the 2024-2025 performance series. Focused on community engagement, artistic integrity, and inclusion, the Marie Rader Series is a mission-driven program that provides the University community and the Greater Southern New Jersey region with access to exceptional performing artists and engagements.

Since its inception in 2008, the series has evolved significantly thanks to a gift from the Rowan Family Foundation in honor of the late Marie Rader, a dedicated supporter of the performing arts and friend of the Rowan family. What began as an annual holiday concert has expanded into a season of outstanding performances for audiences ranging from preschoolers to seniors and everyone in between.

“The Marie Rader Series seeks to use the power of the performing arts to inspire change and strengthen communities,” says Debbie Shapiro, the series’ artistic director. “There is a need and we want to make a difference.”

This year’s season brings artists to Rowan who are not only known around the world, but are also no strangers to some of the nation’s most iconic stages, including the Kimmel Center, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Broadway, and beyond. The program will highlight universally relevant messages such as resilience through community, turning constraints into opportunities, fostering cultural understanding across differences, and giving nature a voice to speak for itself.

Ticket packages for the 24|25 Marie Rader Series are now available at go.rowan.edu/subscribe. Individual tickets for the show will be available in August.

October 19th – PHILADANCO! The Philadelphia Dance CompanyPHILADANCO! is celebrated for its innovation, creativity and preservation of predominantly African-American dance traditions and presents How we maintain as part of the Marie Rader Series. The program tells a story of natural cycles, continuity, shared purpose, and spiritual power, and features works by renowned guest choreographers. In its 55th year, the company remains led by women and continues its long-standing tradition of breaking barriers and building bridges across cultural boundaries while providing performance opportunities for Black dancers.

As part of its involvement in the series, PHILADANCO! will participate in the 3rd Annual Rowan Dance Festival, which invites dancers from local high schools to campus to participate in a series of workshops, master classes, and performances. Led by Co-Artistic Director Kim Bears-Bailey and Associate Artistic Director Janine Beckles, the company will introduce the high school dancers to PHILADANCO’s past, present, and future in a lecture-performance and present an excerpt from the performance to open the evening together on October 5th before the full program begins on the 19th.

15th December – An afternoon with Ali StrokerTony Award winner Ali Stroker, a New Jersey native, will perform an afternoon concert with Broadway favorites. Known for her work as a singer, writer and actress in shows such as Only murders in the building And OzarksStroker is the first wheelchair user to be nominated for and win a Tony Award in 2019. While at Rowan University, Stroker will be teaching a musical master class for students, some of whom will be invited to join her on stage and sing a few songs during her performance on December 15.

March 16 – Timbalooloo: Jazz for childrenThis interactive, dance-through-the-aisles performance tells the story of Clara Net, who falls asleep and walks into a concert in her bed as instruments come to life. Along with a full band, Grammy-winning musician and Timbalooloo founder Oran Etikin takes children and guests on a journey around the world exploring different instruments and discovering how vibrant, global cultures form the backbone of American music. Designed to engage audiences and teach music and language in a natural way, Timbalooloo aims to give a new generation the ability to be fluent in the universal language of music.

April 26 – Chanticleer: Music of a silent worldThe Grammy-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer gives nature a voice through their Music of a silent world Program revolving around the contemporary composer Majel Connery The rivers are our brothers. Each movement of the work represents a part of the natural beauty of our world, from mountains and forests to cliffs and rivers, in a piece that encourages as many people as possible to appreciate, value and protect natural landscapes.

Connery’s program will also be linked to Rowan’s Sound Planet Music Festival, which aims to present powerful performances and learning opportunities focused on the climate crisis. She will take part in a composer’s conversation with a panel of invited guests during this year’s festival on Friday 25 April.

The San Francisco-based ensemble will further its mission to promote global appreciation for the arts by spending the day with members of the Rowan University Concert Choir. Members of the choir will join Chanticleer onstage for a few movements during their April 26 performance.
