As WFAN and the New York Yankees search for their successor to John Sterling, they have tried a lot of things with the team, and if that means putting Craig Carton on commentary for a series, so be it.
Wait what?
That’s right. The former WFAN anchor, who left his afternoon show with Evan Roberts after three years to focus on his Fox Sports program, is returning to the network. But not to host a show; instead, he will provide live commentary alongside Suzyn Waldman for the team’s series against the Texas Rangers on August 9-11.

Carton announced the news on Monday afternoon when he called Evan and Tiki with Roberts and former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber.
“It’s a great honor,” he said, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic. “It’s a great privilege.”
Since Sterling’s retirement, a revolving door of commentators has filled the live commentary spot. Justin Shackil, Ryan Ruocco, Brendan Burke, Rickie Ricardo and Emmanuel Berbari shared the booth with Waldman, the Yankees’ longtime co-commentator.
Despite the supposedly thorough search, a permanent replacement for Sterling remains a mystery. Sterling has withdrawn from the selection process and Carton’s temporary assignment doesn’t suggest much. He almost certainly won’t be the next radio voice of the New York Yankees, but that hasn’t stopped WFAN from having some fun in the dog days of summer.
Kuty said WFAN plans to use the remaining games to evaluate various live commentators, with Sterling’s permanent successor likely to be decided in the offseason.
But the remaining games probably do not include those scheduled for August 9-11.
That’s baseball, Suzyn.
