With the 2024 high school football season exactly one month away, it’s time to get used to all the “new guys” on the Augusta-area football landscape.

When the season kicks off in earnest on August 16, there will be a slew of new playmakers, new coaches, new regions, a new GHSA classification structure and new expectations for championship dreams. But the Aquinas Fightin’ Irish football program isn’t waiting until August to take a look at its most exciting new addition.

Aquinas opened its brand new football facility last Thursday when it hosted Washington-Wilkes for a 7-on-7 football game. The Irish finished their last football season without a home stadium by compiling a record of 9-3 in 2023 and advancing to the quarterfinals of the Class A state playoffs.

This year, Aquinas looks to create more football memories at home as coach James Leonard hopes to lead his program to its second consecutive regional title and first state championship since 2013.

Our photographer Rob Davis was able to capture some images from Aquinas’ first outing in the new stadium on Thursday. Stay tuned for a chat with Coach Leonard later in the week where he will discuss his program’s progress over the summer and the excitement of starting a new season in their own stadium.
