NFL Hall-of-Famer takes a bold stance on JJ McCarthy

NFL Hall-of-Famer takes a bold stance on JJ McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings selected quarterback JJ McCarthy in the first round (No. 10 overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft, making him the best quarterback the franchise has ever selected. Given the 21-year-old rookie’s success in his young career, it’s no surprise that expectations for McCarthy are very high in Minnesota. But there is still some uncertainty about his place in the rankings ahead of training camp.

Minnesota also acquired veteran quarterback Sam Darnold from the San Francisco 49ers in the offseason, and reports from training camp suggest that Darnold is currently the favorite to start next season. While Darnold clearly has a level of professional experience that McCarthy does not yet have, there are some who believe the rookie quarterback needs to be on the field immediately – including former Viking Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss. In a recent segment on Up & Adams, Moss made his stance on the current quarterback situation crystal clear.

“My thing is, when we played, the first three guys they drafted played. There’s no ifs and buts. Now in the fourth, fifth or sixth round… we’ll see. Maybe they get on the field, maybe they don’t, maybe a special teamer. We played the first three rounds back then. Now you draft guys in the first round, they don’t even get on the field. So if you ask me the question, yeah, JJ… I don’t care if he’s not ready, he’s got to be out there.”

That’s a pretty strong statement coming from a man who has been extremely successful in the league, and one that will surely resonate with Vikings fans. With training camp starting in less than two weeks, all eyes will no doubt be on the battle between Darnold and McCarthy for the quarterback spot.
