Plans to redevelop an iconic Galway store approved, with major changes for the famous shop

One of Galway’s most famous stores is set to offer city shoppers a new shopping experience after Galway City Council approved plans for extensive changes to its grand old premises.

The unit at 38-39 Shop Street was in the capable hands of the McCambridge family for nearly 100 years until they sold the business in 2022. The last major renovation took place in 2012 and now the heritage-listed deli, restaurant and gourmet shop is set to undergo significant changes.

In May 2024, plans were submitted to GCC to demolish two sections of the central wall, remove three cold storage rooms, remove the coffee dispenser and relocate a number of display units. The plans also include minor finishing works to elegantly integrate the changes into the premises.

A Historic Building Assessment (HIA) was carried out on behalf of the owner company Cederaglade Ltd, with the report highlighting previous work. The refit and refurbishment in 1998 was discussed in detail, acknowledging the successful transformation of the premises during this time.

The report also recognised the unique and irreplaceable cultural value of the building, which has existed in some form for centuries and is adjacent to the famous Lynch’s Castle.

The report concluded with several recommendations for further heritage conservation and also expressed the belief that the proposed works could be carried out without affecting the culture or character of the street. The HIA report even recommended approval regarding the need for structural strengthening at this important site.
