Christopher Parosa appointed Lane County District Attorney

Governor Tina Kotek announced Friday that she is appointing Christopher Parosa as Lane County District Attorney, effective June 28.

According to Kotek, Parosa will fill a vacancy created by the impending retirement of longtime District Attorney Patty Perlow.

“I have actually decided to retire early,” Perlow said. “Chris received an overwhelming majority of the vote, so the community is ready for his successor and the office is in a great position for the transition.”

In December, Perlow told The Register-Guard that she had originally planned to retire from office in 2025 after 34 years of service in Eugene.

“I’ve been in this building since August 1989,” Perlow said. “It’s time.”

The district attorney is the county’s lead prosecutor and is responsible for leading a team of assistant district attorneys who prosecute individuals suspected of crimes, conduct investigations, and recommend sentences.

Following Oregon’s May primary, certified election results released Monday showed Parosa received over 66% of the 78,659 votes cast in the Lane County district attorney race, defeating his opponent James Cleavenger, who received nearly 33%.

Parosa currently serves as Perlow’s first deputy, and in the run-up to the primary election, he said his Lane County colleagues asked him to run for the top job.

“Following the public announcement of District Attorney Perlow’s resignation, Lane County prosecutors asked me to run for the office of Lane County’s next District Attorney based on my nearly 20 years of experience, strong relationships with community partners, temperament and desire to enact common sense criminal justice reform measures,” Parosa said.
