Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning love story of a sex worker

The trailer for “Anora,” Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning tale of the love story between a sex worker and the son of a Russian oligarch, is finally here.

The dramedy is about Anora (Mikey Madison), an Uzbek-American stripper whose boss often sets her up with Russian-speaking customers. One night she meets Vanya (Mark Eidelstein), the rich young son of a Russian oligarch, who makes her his girlfriend for a week. The two unexpectedly fall in love and get married – but the fairytale is in danger when Vanya’s parents find out.

“Anora” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and received a 7.5-minute standing ovation and almost universal applause. diversityIn his review, chief film critic Peter Debruge called the film “a violent Safdie-style film about two cultures (Russian and American), two languages (Russian and English) and two currencies (money and sex).” At the closing ceremony in Cannes, “Anora” won the festival’s prestigious Palme d’Or for best film.

During a press conference for the film in Cannes, Baker – who also directed “Tangerine,” “The Florida Project” and “Red Rocket” – said he makes films about sex workers in the hope of “helping to remove the stigma.”

“If there’s an intention with all of these films, I think it’s to tell human stories, stories that are hopefully universal,” he said. “They help remove the stigma that’s attached to this livelihood, that’s always been attached to this livelihood.”

“Anora” also stars Yuri Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, Lindsey Normington, Ivy Wolk, Luna Sofía Miranda, Alena Gurevich, Aleksei Serebryakov and Darya Ekamasova. The film is scheduled to be released by Neon on October 18.
