Taylor Townsend is now Wimbledon champion after winning the women’s doubles title with Katerina Siniakova

Accordingly The Associated PressSiniakova won her third women’s doubles title after teaming with Townsend to defeat Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1) in Saturday’s late-night match, marking a major milestone in the pair’s careers.

Siniakova has won seven major doubles titles with her long-time partner Barbora Krejcikova, who also won the Wimbledon singles title, and with Coco Gauff at this year’s French Open. This win has special meaning for Townsend after she finished runner-up at the 2022 French Open. US Open and French Open 2023, both against Siniakova and Krejcikova.

The 28-year-old Chicago native was delighted to be working with Siniakova at this year’s clash.

“I just have to say that I am so happy that I was able to work with Katerina,” Reuters reported Townsend.

She continued: “I remember her kicking my butt in my first Grand Slam final (the 2022 US Open), so it was great to be on the same side of the net this time. It’s been a fantastic few weeks and it means a lot to cross the finish line.”

Townsend described the unique way Siniakova suggested they play together to win the doubles title, according to Wimbledon Website.

“I’m so glad Katerina DMed me,” Townsend told reporters, noting that the two had discussed a partnership on social media.

“We came together in an unconventional way, but I’m so happy we were able to work together,” she added.

Despite previous setbacks, Townsend stressed that this victory was “special” for her.

“I’ve been close a few times, so to cross the finish line here really means a lot to me and to have done it at Wimbledon is very special,” she said.
