The Cohasset Dramatic Club’s Summer Theatre Workshop presents the inspirational musical Newsies JR. on July 18 at the South Shore Music Circus and July 19-21 at the Scituate Performing Arts Center. Newsies JR. is a 60-minute adaptation of the 2012 Broadway hit Newsies, featuring the Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein.

Although he walks with a crutch, Crutchie, Jack Kelly’s best friend, skillfully uses his lame leg to sell more newspapers. With his optimistic sense of humor, Crutchie is the heart of the Newsies resistance and is played here by Laird LaCoste of Weymouth in the Cohasset Dramatic Club Youth Summer Workshop production of “Newsies JR,” running July 18-21.

Inspired by the newsboy strike of 1899, Newsies JR. tells the stirring story of Jack Kelly (Will Murdock of Scituate) and his child labor force of overlooked, underpaid “newsboys.” When the titans of newspaper publishing across New York City raise distribution prices at the expense of the newsboys, Jack is forced to lead the newsboys on strike and fight for what is rightfully theirs. United with little more than sheer grit and determination, they discover how to make a change for the better and make history.

Young newspaper reporter Katherine Plummer is determined to make a name for herself by stepping outside the traditional role of a woman of her time. Pictured here is Winslow Levin of Hingham, who plays Katherine in the Cohasset Dramatic Club Youth Summer Workshop production of “Newsies JR.” The performance runs July 18-21.

With powerful songs like “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies JR. is packed with nonstop excitement and a timeless message. It’s a wonderful, uplifting family show for all ages, featuring a strong ensemble cast of students from Cohasset, Scituate, Norwell, Hingham, Weymouth, and Braintree.
