Anyone who has had the pleasure of exploring Anguilla from the water will have noticed the striking cluster of tall, angular white mansions on the island’s stunning West End beach. Designed by famed architect Myron Goldfinger in the late 1990s – many people know him for the similar mansion in Southampton, NY, prominently featured in The Wolf of Wall Street—they have long been praised as “geometric sandcastles, (with) an abundance of triangles, semicircles and rectangular glass surfaces” by people like Architecture Digest.

Currently, two of the original Goldfinger villas and a smaller residence make up Altamer Luxury Villas, a private villa resort that is the jewel of the Lesser Antilles island’s luxury accommodations. The five-bedroom flagship offerings are the 11,000-square-foot Antilles Pearl and the 13,000-square-foot Blue Diamond, both designed for exclusive use rather than single rooms, giving each stay the feel of private ownership.

Altamer Luxury Villas “embody the pinnacle of the Caribbean experience,” the property’s description states. “With a commitment to unparalleled hospitality and stunning surroundings, Altamer offers an exclusive retreat for discerning travelers seeking sophistication and relaxation.” Every villa stay includes access to infinity pools overlooking the sparkling waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Guests can enjoy a range of personalized services and amenities, including gourmet dining experiences prepared by private chefs, relaxing spa treatments and select island excursions. The five bedrooms include a palatial master suite and four additional guest rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms and ocean views.

Additionally, Altamer explains, “Our world-class local concierge offers services such as travel arrangements, COVID application assistance, trip planning for activities such as boat cruises, private chef dinners, moke rentals, horseback riding, and even wedding/contract planning. Want to cruise out for local crawfish and then have it cooked outdoors by the pool? No problem.

Altamer is now owned and managed by New York-based real estate investment, development and asset and property management firm Time Equities Inc. (TEI), ensuring its continued prominence and not inconsiderable upkeep. We spoke to Ray Aberman, Director of Marketing and Business Development at Altamer Luxury Villas, about this amazing landmark:

What is the architectural heritage of the property?

Altamer was founded in 1995 by Rebecca and Michael Eggleton, a young American couple vacationing in Anguilla who discovered a beautiful piece of land on which to build a vacation villa. The Eggletons asked Myron Goldfinger to be their architect after seeing his work at the nearby (now closed) Covecastles Resort. Three large villas and another five acres later, Altamer Luxury Villas was born. The name is inspired by the Italian word for high, “alta,” and the French word for sea, “mer.”

How can it continue to impress compared to other luxury resorts in the area?

Altamer is more than just a collection of luxury villas. Its staff, comprised of Anguilla natives, most of whom have worked there for twenty years, are passionate about the island and enjoy sharing its magic. What sets Altamer apart from other local luxury resorts is the ability to create curated itineraries with the help of concierge service. Staff can get as involved as guests desire, providing a unique and personalized experience compared to other local resorts.

How is Anguilla developing as a travel destination?

Although the number of establishments on the island remains relatively small, the island is enjoying a growing international reputation as a luxury destination. According to Stacey Liburd, tourism director of the Anguilla Tourist Board, the board’s main goal is to attract specific tourist groups, such as honeymooners and adventure seekers. They also place emphasis on environmentally sustainable developments and community-oriented tourism programs.

Who are Altamer’s customers and what features do they value most?

Most recent clients are multi-generational families, groups of couples, two or three families travelling together and larger groups of friends. The most sought-after features are complete privacy and a customisable experience with bespoke itinerary planning. The villas offer ample space for groups to meet for activities, while also providing enough room for individual enjoyment and relaxation.

Are there any future development plans for the property?

The property is in the early stages of exploring possible options for future renovations, including a dedicated pickleball court (guests can currently play pickleball on a converted tennis court, racquets provided) and a possible redesign of the 8-bedroom, 1300-square-foot African Sapphire villa. (Editor’s note: the third of the original large Goldfinger mansions to be damaged by a hurricane).
