Love and whiskey: The relationship between Nearest Green and Jack Daniel

Through meticulous research, Fawn Weaver has uncovered the intricacies of the relationship between Nearest Green and Jack Daniel. The two had a remarkable bond, and Jack Daniel worked throughout his life to preserve the legacy of his friend and mentor.

Nearest was born a slave in 1820 and was freed after the end of the Civil War. Jack Daniel, born between 1846 and 1850, was a child at the time and his father died while serving in the Confederate Army. Despite their very different experiences, the two quickly became friends and Jack Daniel soon developed one of the most famous whiskey brands in the world.
