Chris Jericho believes social media will accelerate talent development in wrestling

A true veteran in the world of pro wrestling, Chris Jericho is proud to be working in AEW and isn’t afraid to show it. As a veteran with over three decades of experience, he’s seen a lot of changes in the business, and it seems he’s not too thrilled about the impact social media has on the current generation of professional wrestlers.

Social media has completely changed the way wrestling fans interact with the sport. Clips are now easily accessible and anyone can comment. In the wrestling industry, a viral video can propel a talent to new heights, but a mishap can just as quickly expose them to intense scrutiny.

Speaking to MSN, Chris Jericho spoke about these changes, pointing out that in the past, despite occasionally having bad matches, wrestlers were able to improve their skills over the years without the public seeing them.

In the modern era, however, every performance is scrutinized because it is instantly available worldwide. Jericho believes this exposure accelerates the development of wrestlers.

Back then, you could have really bad games for years and learn. Now everything is out there for everyone to see. I think that’s why there’s pressure on boys and girls because of experience. One of the advantages is that you get seen on YouTube and if you’re really good, you can suddenly get a lot of exposure much quicker than you could before. At the beginning of my career, it was more word of mouth, magazines, the different areas you worked in in Japan, things like that. You could build an image and then come to the States.”

Chris Jericho is the current FTW World Champion and is using social media to his advantage to further expand his Learning Tree gimmick. Regardless, there will be many who will agree with Jericho, as the advent of social media is truly a double-edged sword.
