London: Czech-American duo Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend, both seeded fourth, defeated second-seeded Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe to win the Wimbledon women’s doubles title.

Playing under closed roof late in the evening, Siniakova and Townsend recovered from a two-set deficit in the first set before defeating the reigning US Open champions 7-6(5), 7-6(1) in 2 hours and 4 minutes for a memorable result. The winners secured the victory just before 10:30 p.m. London time.

For the duo, it is their first joint title in only their third tournament together.

In addition, it is Siniakova’s third Wimbledon doubles victory and her ninth overall at a major, while Townsend celebrated her first Grand Slam success after finishing runner-up in the doubles finals at the US Open and Roland-Garros in the past.

“I feel great. I got 500 text messages. I didn’t know that many people had my number. This is going to take a while,” Townsend said after the game.

“This is my first, my first Grand Slam title. I’ve been close twice before. I think we played very well to get over the finish line like that. We were just focused and in control. We played our way. It felt good the way we did it,” she added.

The result rounded off a remarkable few months for Siniakova, who won two consecutive majors on two different surfaces – with two different partners – after her victory at the French Open in June with Coco Gauff. IANS
