Ariana Grande criticizes double standards because of voice change

Ariana Grande has spoken out against the double standards she faced after being criticized for her voice breaking.

The “Thank U, Next” singer was mocked last month when she spoke in a lower octave before switching back to a higher pitch during an appearance on Penn Badgley’s “Podcrushed,” but she stressed that a man would not face such ridicule if he had been methodical about a role.

About her role as Glinda in “Wicked,” she told Evan Ross Katz in his podcast “Shut Up Evan”: “I just spent a lot of time playing a character every day and training my voice for different things.

“The voice is in the body, it is an instrument, and muscle memory is something real. This is something normal for people whose job it is to change.”

“You see male actors – sure, people make jokes here and there about anyone who goes through that – but they always look back and say, ‘Oh, wow, how dedicated he is to his craft. What an incredible transformation! He’s a brilliant actor!’

“And God forbid I sneeze like Glinda.

“I had a job to do. People change and habits evolve. It’s strange to be under such a microscope.”

Evan, who has been friends with Ariana for several years, agreed, telling listeners that “both” tones are her true voice and that her current sound depends entirely on circumstances, such as how intense her vocal training is and what she is currently working on.

And the presenter argued that many people do not know what it means to be a professional singer or that they have no sense of “vocal competence”.

Ariana agreed: “(It’s) a full-time commitment and a lifestyle; it’s not something you can mess around with.”

Elsewhere in the podcast, the 31-year-old singer and actress explained that she tries not to react to public opinion on issues such as her divorce from Dalton Gomez and her subsequent romance with her ‘Wicked’ co-star Ethan Slater because she prefers to protect her “peace and privacy.”

Without directly addressing the backlash her relationship with Ethan has sparked, she said, “There are still a lot of misconceptions out there about everything.

“I’ve sent you so many drafts saying things like, ‘I really want to say that!’

“I always sleep on it and always come back to the conclusion that I should protect it and not fall for the bait, because I’ve found that protecting my peace and my privacy and the actual details… sometimes when it comes to addressing something, you would actually be revealing more of your actual, true life.”
