West Point girls stay in the race; Latrobe and Murrysville win District 31 series

Pitcher Lexi Stabiles threw a two-hit shutout and Jocelyn Luft hit a two-run single in the fourth inning to lead West Point to a 2-0 win over Caln Township on Sunday in the Pennsylvania Little League Softball Major Division state tournament in Wellsboro.

Stabiles managed twelve strikeouts and did not let a single batter through.

Luft collected two hits, so West Point remained in the losers bracket.

West Point, which lost 7-5 to Pittston on Friday, will face the loser of the Indiana/Pittston game on Monday at 5 p.m.

District 31 Legion

Latrobe pitcher Tyler Smith allowed one run on three hits and the Jethawks defeated Hempfield East 9-1 in the second game of the American Legion District 31 semifinals at Pitt-Greensburg on Sunday.

The Jethawks, who won Game 1 1-0 on Saturday, advance to the championship game on Wednesday.

They will play Murrysville for the title. Hempfield East travels to Bushy Run for third place. All four semifinalists have qualified for the Region 7 tournament in Claysburg, which begins Friday.

Latrobe took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and extended its lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning.

The Jethawks decided the game with a sixth inning with five runs.

Hempfield East’s run came in the seventh inning.

Erick Batista went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Smith added to his cause by going 3-for-3, and Cooper Basciano had two hits.

The loss was due to Grayson Willis.

Murrysville 2 Bushy Run 1 – Murrysville scored two runs in the first inning, defeated Bushy Run and won the best-of-three series.

Max Bernadowski and Cole Brinker scored the first three runs with hits, and Nolan Boehm and winning pitcher Erik Streussnig brought them in.

Bushy Run scored his run in the fourth inning when Jon Lovre hit a double and scored on Ian Temple’s single.

Streussnig and Blake Bertucci limited Bushy Run to two hits.

Brinker had a double and a single for Murrysville and Brody Reese had two hits.
