After obtaining approval from Newtown Township authorities, Utah-based Picklr began converting a vacant storefront into an 11-court indoor club that could open in the fall and offer “more than just a sport, a lifestyle.”

The 2,800-square-foot Bed, Bath & Beyond, 20 West Street in the Newtown Shopping Center, will be home to the pickleball facility, featuring professional surfaces, a pro shop, professional coaching, league play, tournaments, lockers and showers. The facility is members-only and costs between $119 and $129 per month. It is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to midnight.

The Newtown Township location is part of Picklr’s nationwide expansion to approximately 80 clubs and will be Picklr’s first in Pennsylvania.

“At Picklr, pickleball is more than just a sport; it’s a lifestyle that promotes community, competition and fun,” says Picklr’s website.

Mark Meginniss, a land use and zoning attorney representing Picklr, added, “It’s perfect for this location. It’s also in the least trafficked part of the mall.”

The mall where the club will open will feature anchor stores such as Acme and Staples, as well as Chick-Fil-A, TD Bank and Blue Point Grill.

“The reality is that (the Bed, Bath & Beyond store) is a vacant big box store in the mall,” Meginniss said. “This is a better use, both for the mall and other tenants, but also for the community.”
