“Thank God there are good guys with guns”

ATLANTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene praised former President Donald Trump’s Secret Service agents following the assassination attempt on him.

“Thank God there are good guys with guns,” she said.

She also criticized a bill by Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson that would strip convicted felons sentenced to prison from the Secret Service. Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of serious crimes in New York, but sentencing was delayed after the Supreme Court ruled that presidents “are entitled to at least immunity from prosecution for all their official acts.”

Greene described the bill as part of a “Democratic gun government.”

The Secret Service is under increased surveillance following the shooting.

The rooftop from which the shots were fired was less than 150 meters from where Trump was speaking. According to the AP, that’s a distance from which a good marksman could easily hit a human-sized target. For comparison, 150 meters is the distance from which U.S. Army recruits must hit a human-sized silhouette to qualify for the M16 assault rifle in basic training. The AR-style rifle, like the one used by the shooter at the Trump rally, is the semi-automatic civilian version of the military M16.

President Joe Biden said Sunday he had ordered an independent review of security at the rally.

Biden said he had also directed the U.S. Secret Service to review all security measures for the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday in Milwaukee. Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the Secret Service’s coordinator for the convention, later told reporters the agency was pleased with the comprehensive planning for the Republican convention.
