James is not the only player with a famous father in the Summer League

While the biggest crowds come to see Lakers rookie Bronny James, the Las Vegas Summer League also features many players with NBA fathers.

DJ Rodman, son of Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman, played in the final three minutes of the Los Angeles Clippers’ 87-78 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday.

As a tribute to his father’s rebounding skills, he grabbed three rebounds in those three minutes. As a tribute to his father’s shooting skills, he also threw up a three-pointer.

James may have ended up with the Lakers because of his famous father, but he’s no exception. The NBA is a family business, where players’ children become players and coaches’ children become coaches. That’s especially true in the Summer League, where teams often fight to fill the ends of their rosters.

Ron Harper Jr., whose father played with Rodman on the Chicago Bulls, joined the Celtics’ summer team. Scotty Pippen Jr. scored 16 points for the Grizzlies’ summer team on Friday, although to our knowledge neither Bill Wennington nor Luc Longley have children on their Summer League rosters.

Jameer Nelson Jr. is with the Spurs for the Vegas season, while the Warriors have Antonio Davis’ son Trayce Jackson-Davis and Anthony Carter’s son Devin plays for the Kings. The Rockets have a one-two punch with AJ Griffin, the son of a former player who is also a coach.

The only difference is Bronny James’ incredible popularity, which has made Lakers games a bigger event than any other in Vegas. Even a matchup between No. 2 pick Alex Sarr and No. 3 pick Reed Sheppard had plenty of empty seats and a quiet crowd at the Thomas & Mack Center compared to the excitement every time James touched the ball.

James may have inherited fame from his superstar father, but when it comes to playing time in the Summer League, many NBA kids are welcome.
