For which places are each-way bets worthwhile?

Three quarters of all bets on the race are each-way bets and they are so popular because you are not actually betting on your horse to win. Instead, you are betting on it to finish in the top few places, the exact number of which is determined by the bookmakers.

When you bet on the outright – or on the chance of winning – it’s all or nothing. You either win or you lose. If your horse doesn’t finish first, you don’t win a penny. But if you bet on both places, you’re actually making two bets with the bookmaker.

It’s a bet on the horse to finish first and another on it to finish a certain number of places that the bookmaker pays out on. So if you bet, say, £1 each way, you’ve made two bets that cost you £2 in total.

What does this mean for winnings? If your horse is 12/1 and you bet £1 on the outright, you will receive your £12 as winnings plus your original £1 stake. However, if you bet on both sides, you will receive £12 as winnings plus your £1 stake.

If the bookmakers offer an additional 1/4 of the odds for a place, you will receive an additional £3 plus your £1 stake. If your horse is placed but does not win, you will only receive your £3 and your £1 stake back.

Bookmakers usually pay out at least the top four places at the Grand National, but given the larger field and the nature of the event, many are offering more as part of an extra place promotion. Here are the payouts from some of the major bookmakers this year:

  • Coral – Six places each way, odds 1/5

  • Ladbrokes – Five places each way, odds 1/5

  • Betfred – Seven places each way, odds 1/5

  • Bet365 – Six places each way, odds 1/5

  • Paddy Power – Six places each way, odds 1/5
