Baysox Drop series finale ends Sunday afternoon

The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, lost their series finale 5-3 to the Altoona Curve, the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, on Sunday afternoon at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

Bowie (8-10, 40-46) was neck and neck with Altoona in the first innings. The right-handed starter Trace bright allowed two early solo home runs to Charles McAdoo and Dustin Peterson of the Curve. However, the Baysox were able to respond more than once. Frederick Bencosme got a pair of hits on Sunday when he hit a single in the second inning and scored after a missed throw to second base following a successful steal of Silas Ardoin, who reached the base three times in the competition. Jude Fabian left the game on Sunday as a precaution after being hit by a pitch in the top third. Bowie turned a 2-1 deficit in the fourth inning into a 3-2 lead with a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded by Dylan Beavers and a walk with the bases full by Matthew Etzel. However, Bowie had trouble getting the big hit, and in two separate frames the bases were loaded.

Altoona tied the game again in the fourth inning when Peterson scored his second run of the game against Bright, who had five strikeouts and allowed three runs in four innings.

The Curve finally took the lead with a run against right-handers Levi Stoudt (L, 0-2) in his only inning as a relief pitcher in the fifth before adding another run in the eighth. Altoona right-hander Emmanuel Chapman (W, 2-1) silenced the Baysox hitters in the middle innings, throwing three and a half innings as a relief pitcher without scoring.

Bowie threatened with a pair of two-out singles in the ninth inning against Eddy Yean, but Yean (S, 2) got Ardoin to hit a flyout and end the game. The Baysox went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position on Sunday and left 12 on base. Bowie has the next four days off during the MLB All-Star break before returning to action Friday.

The Baysox’s next home game begins Friday, July 19, against the Hartford Yard Goats, the Colorado Rockies’ Double-A affiliate team, a three-game series from July 19-21.
