Rockies set franchise record for most home runs in a 3-game series

Rockies set franchise record for most home runs in a 3-game series

The Colorado Rockies didn’t need the home run-friendly atmosphere of Coors Field to set a new home run standard during their weekend series at Citi Field against the New York Mets.

Over the course of the three-game series, the Rockies hitters hit 12 home runs in Sunday’s 8-5 win – including six, half of which came from Michael Toglia.

Ezequiel Tovar contributed two home runs, while Brenton Doyle hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, his 15th home run of the season.

That was the most home runs the Rockies have ever hit in a single 3-game series.

The Rockies had hit a dozen home runs in three games twice before, but neither of those feats corresponded perfectly to a three-game streak. One of the two feats spanned three games of a five-game streak against the Montreal Expos in August 1999. The other spanned two games of a 2000 streak against Montreal and one against the Mets. Both games took place at Coors Field.

Sunday’s six home runs were the most for the Rockies in a single game since Aug. 8, 2021, when they also hit a sextet of home runs in a 13-8 win over the Miami Marlins. The tally matched a franchise road record last set on June 5, 2013 in Cincinnati.

The Rockies also became the third team this season to hit a dozen home runs in three games, joining the Los Angeles Dodgers (May 4-6) and the Cincinnati Reds (July 11-13). The Reds’ three-game sweep included three runs at the Rockies’ expense on Thursday at Great American Ballpark, in a game Cincinnati won 8-1.

MICHAEL TOGLIA PLAYED THE GAME OF HIS LIFE

In three consecutive at-bats starting in the fifth inning on Sunday, Michael Toglia threw balls over the fence. Rockies Communications As highlighted on social media, Toglia became the first switch hitter in Rockies history to have a 3-home run game.

He hit his first two home runs from the batter’s box with his right hand, the last one was a left-hander.

Since being called back up to the MLB from AAA Albuquerque last month, Michael Toglia has an OPS of .864, with 12 home runs and a .230/.301/.563 line. But until Sunday, he’d endured a rough July, saved only by the four home runs he managed before Sunday; his July batting average before the Rockies’ final game before the All-Star break was just .167.

Toglia’s first home run – a solo hit in the fifth inning – got Germán Márquez out of trouble in his first start since his Tommy John surgery last year. Márquez left the field trailing 3-2, but the home run explosion caused the veteran to leave his comeback with a no-decision after 4 innings.
