Black-owned comic book store: A passion project for an assistant principal – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

By day, Ramone Edmundson is a high school assistant principal and a successful owner of a comic book store on the west side of Indianapolis.

Edmundson runs Prideland Comics & Collectibles, the only black-owned comic book store in Indianapolis. For now, it’s a part-time job as he continues his career as an assistant principal at Daniel Webster School 46 in Indianapolis.

Edmundson started reading comics at age 5, and his love for the medium has only grown since then. He says comics have a unique way of opening up new worlds and universes to the children who read them.

Edmundson says that kids who read comics not only expand their vocabulary, but they’re also more curious and use their imaginations to solve problems and explore. He says comics have become so popular that universities and colleges are offering courses that focus on the philosophy and history of comics. And the real measure of what’s cool, he says, is that even celebrities are getting involved by writing their own comics.

Many consider comic books to be a solid investment opportunity. Edmundson highlights a comic book that sold for $0.10 in 1938 that recently sold for $6 million at auction.

When he leaves his teaching career, Edmundson dreams of running his comic book store full-time. He will spend his time helping collectors find the rare issues and helping the next generation discover new worlds through the pages of a comic book.
