And what does the Estádio Municipal de Braga 1.0 look like?

Braga’s football stadium was built on the site of a former quarry that dominated the city, hence its nickname – A Pedreira, which means the quarry. The stands were built along the playing field, which means the facility fits perfectly into the rocky landscape of the hill.

The construction of the stadium alone cost over 60 million euros, but the difficult stone floor meant the costs were much higher. A spacious tunnel measuring up to 5,000 square meters was built between the massive stands. Another interesting solution is a rope roof between the stands, which is said to be modeled on Inca bridges.

The stadium is rarely full, as local team Sporting Braga does not attract that many spectators. The venue operates under the commercial name Estadio AXA, but the sponsorship deal is not recognized by the city authorities that own the stadium.
