IDF soldier Halevi speaks about the October 7 attack on Deif and investigation

IDF soldier Halevi speaks about the October 7 attack on Deif and investigation

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi delivered a situation assessment at Palmahim Air Base on Sunday and spoke about the recent attack by Israeli forces on a compound where Mohammad Deif was staying.

“Yesterday, in a joint operation by the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet, we attacked a compound in Khan Yunis where Mohammad Deif, the commander of Hamas’ military wing, was hiding – the man who planned and ordered the October 7 attacks.”

Halevi pointed out that Rafa’a Salameh, commander of the Khan Yunis Brigade, was killed in the attack, which had already been confirmed by the Israeli army on Sunday.

The Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces also stated that intelligence assessments indicated there were no hostages in the complex.

“It is too early to summarize the results of the attack that Hamas is trying to cover up. We are determined to continue pursuing senior Hamas officials who planned and carried out the October 7 massacre.”

“Mohammad Deif was afraid of dying, so he hid in such a way that he even had the command of the action. He hid and sacrificed with him his men and civilians who were nearby and in danger, and only a few were injured,” Halevi said.

“We have found him and we will find the next ones in line.”

After discussing Deif’s unknown fate, Halevi also addressed the Israeli Defense Forces’ investigation into the events of the October 7 massacre in Kibbutz Be’eri and the Israeli soldiers’ response to the investigation.

Halevi mentioned that he had met with Shaldag commanders and added: “I see the actions of Shaldag soldiers and commanders throughout the war in all areas, and the citizens of Israel should know that there is a generation of exemplary soldiers and commanders whose heroism is still talked about.”

Halevi’s statements come at a time of criticism from within the Israeli Defense Forces over the Be’eri investigation released last week. The investigation found that over 300 terrorists had entered the kibbutz and residents were left alone for hours until Shaldag troops arrived at 9:00 a.m.

The report noted that the Shaldag soldiers withdrew due to a decision by their commander.

Numerous Israeli sources quoted Roni Eliav, a combat soldier in the elite Sayeret Matkal unit, as criticising the results and accusing the army of covering up the truth.

“The published investigation by the Israel Defense Forces into the Battle of Be’eri is full of lies and false conclusions. This is not an investigation, but a cover-up for the riot forces and Barak Hiram,” Eliav wrote, quoted by Israeli media.

He also criticized the senior Israeli army officers who led the investigation, which concluded that the army had neither prepared for such a massive terrorist infiltration nor had few forces on standby outside the communities along the Gaza border.
