How does the book “House of the Dragon” end?

If you were as distracted as Alicent during the last episode, House of the Dragon is back for the second seasonand it’s bloodier than ever. Thanks to that little shit Joffrey in game of Throneswe actually know how the show will ultimately end. I can forgive the murder and the tyrannical behavior, but spoilers are where I draw the line.

If you missed Joffrey’s secret mention or the whole game of Thrones thanks to this final season, don’t worry, there is another place where you can find out all about the end of this sexy yet wild show. Let’s talk about Fire and bloodthe book that House of the Dragon is actually based on that. How exactly does it work House of the Dragon “Book” ending? Let’s get into it. Of course, spoilers follow.

Which book is House of the Dragon related to?

Instead of a whole book series like game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is based on chapters from the Targaryen history book, Fire and Blood. This book is made up of chapters describing different aspects of these white-haired, sleazy royals, but the series focuses on the succession conflict after the death of King Viserys I. It covers the conquests and reigns of Aegon I Targaryen, Aenys I Targaryen, King Maegor I Targaryen, and Jaehaerys I Targaryen – what a tongue twister. It ends with the reign of Aegon III in the text, Aftermath.

The book is said to have been written by Archmaester Gyldayn based on the story he was told. This also explains the differences between the book and the series as he may not have known everything that happened. And erm, because of the dramatic effects and the killing scenes like Alicent riding Criston Cole.

In 2017, George RR Martin said the story had become too big for one book and that there would be a second part, but it had not yet been written. The series is currently covering that second part.

Okay, if you hate spoilers, leave now!!! This time you can’t blame that little shit Joffrey!! LEAVE!

Still here? Then let’s see how the House of the Dragon book ends and how we can expect the show to end if they stay true to the inspiration.

The main conflict in this story is that King Viserys I loses his wife and newborn son, so he names his daughter Princess Rhaenyra as his heir. This makes his brother Prince Daemon angry (Matt Smith is so sexy when he’s angry, sorry). Then Viserys marries Alicent Hightower, his daughter’s best friend!!! Can you imagine how awkward Thanksgiving would be?

Alicent gives birth to sons, including her eldest son Aegon. In the series, we see that Alicent believes Viserys wants Aegon to succeed him, but in the book, this is portrayed as more of a coup orchestrated by her. Alicent believes that a male heir should be preferred over a female one and that Rhaenyra is not fit to rule. The book also portrays the war as largely due to tensions between Rhaenyra and Alicent’s children and their past conflicts.

In his novel, Martin writes: “There was never any doubt that King Viserys still intended for his daughter to succeed him to the Iron Throne and for her sons to follow her in turn.”

Rhaenyra is crowned queen at Dragonstone, the Targaryen home, while Aegon plays king in King’s Landing. The two sides are quickly dubbed “The Green” and “The Black,” after the color Alicent and Rhaenyra most often wear.

Rhaenyra’s second-born son Lucerys and King Aegon’s younger brother Aemond seek support from Lord Borros Baratheon of Storm’s End with their dragons. But Aemond and his giant dragon Vhagar kill Lucerys and his dragon Arrax. In revenge, Rhaneyra’s uncle and second husband, Prince Daemon (yes, you just have to take the incest as it comes), has Aegon II’s eldest son and heir, Jaehaerys, murdered by two assassins. THIS IS INCREDIBLE!! I thought I was being vengeful, but WOW.

Okay, the War of Succession is now in full swing and it is known as the “Dance of the Dragons” because sure, of courseboth sides ride dragons. It’s cruel and at first the greens kill, but then Rhaenyra turns the tide and attacks the capital of King’s Landing. She drives out Aegon II and takes many greens prisoner. Girlboss!!!

But unfortunately that’s not all. The Greens have emptied the state treasury and forced Rhaenyra to raise extremely high taxes. She is also still extremely paranoid and vengeful, so she continues to execute perceived traitors. As a result, a violent uprising breaks out in the capital, and angry mobs storm the dragonpit and kill most of the remaining dragons – SCREAM!! They also murder Joffrey Velaryon, her last surviving son from her first marriage to Laenor Velaryon. After leading him as queen for only half a year, Rhaenyra is forced to flee.

Meanwhile, there have been a LOT of deaths, including Aegon II’s two brothers, Aemond and Daeron, as well as his only remaining son, Maelor. Aegon is crippled and no longer fertile, which means he will have no more sons, oh oh! And as for Rhaenyra, her three eldest children were all killed, along with her husband, Prince Daemon – NOT MATT SMITH!

Rhaenyra is betrayed and captured by Aegon II, who cruelly executes her by having his crippled dragon Sunfyre burn her alive before devouring her in six bites. This is the part that Joffrey ruined for us in game of Thrones when he once boasted to Sansa.

Is the war over now? NO. The Blacks’ supporters rally behind Rhaenyra’s fourth son, Aegon the Younger, even though he is still held captive by Aegon II. As the last living male member of House Targaryen (aside from the lost prince Viserys Targaryen), Aegon the Younger is named heir by Aegon II. I guess that’s a nice way to end things. Sorry, I killed your mother and your whole family over the line of succession, but you’re going to be king!! Plus, he’s still threatening to kill him.

But Aegon II must give up the throne sooner than he imagined when the last Green army is destroyed at the Battle of the Kingsroad and he is murdered by his own men, who then surrender unconditionally to the Black. Aegon the Younger is released and crowned King Aegon III, and the war is over!!! But almost all of the dragons are now gone, and those that remain went feral or died during his reign. Hence his nickname “Dragonbane”. He marries Jaehaera, daughter of Aegon II and granddaughter of Alicent, thus uniting the two warring branches of House Targaryen.

And as for our girl Alicent, she survives the whole thing! But she is locked in her chambers (the Dream) for the last year of her life, goes a little crazy, and eventually dies during an outbreak of winter fever in 133 AC

House Targaryen rules for the next 200 years through Rhaenyra’s direct family line until it is overthrown by Robert Baratheon, leading to the events of game of Thrones.

The end!!! Wow, I’m exhausted.
