FREELAND – Apple Mountain Golf Club, host of several GAM tournaments in recent years, will welcome some of them back when the 10th GAM Super Senior Championship is held at the popular course on Monday and Tuesday, July 15-16.
A field of 80 GAM golfers aged 65 and over will compete in the 36-hole stroke play championship, which will crown a Super Senior overall champion and create a Legends Division for golfers aged 70 and over. In addition, a Grand Legend Award will be presented to the player aged 75 and over with the lowest score.
Opened in 1998, the Apple Mountain course was designed by John Sandford of Florida-based Sanford Ferris Design. In 2018, drainage and sand conditions at the greenside bunkers were improved.
Sanford created a championship course with four tee boxes on each hole and generous fairways. Water and elevation changes are part of the challenge on a scenic course that can be up to 6,900 yards long.
The full-service public facility and resort has built a reputation for excellent course conditions under Superintendent Chris Ballosh. Chad Maxim is the PGA’s head golf professional. For more information, visit applemountain.com
Last year, Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member John Morgan won another title in his illustrious career at Bloomfield Hills Country Club. Gary Quitiquit of Highland was the winner of the Legends Division.
Morgan and Quitiquit return to defend their titles in a field that once again includes most of the state’s top senior players, as well as Michigan Golf Hall of Fame members Morgan, Randy Lewis, Terry Moore, Greg Reynolds and Bill Zylstra.
Several former champions are in the running, including Moore, the 2015 winner, Ian Harris of Bloomfield Hills, the 2018 and 2019 winner, Rick Herpich of Orchard Lake, the 2020 winner, and Ray Emsley of Davisburg, the 2021 champion.
