Shannen Doherty’s “90210” co-stars pay tribute to her death

Shannen Doherty will be remembered by her Beverly Hills, 90210 co-stars.

The actress was honored with poignant tributes from her former co-stars from the ’90s series following her death on Saturday, July 13, at the age of 53.

Jason Priestley, 54, remembered his screen twin in an Instagram post on Sunday, July 14.

“I am shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of my friend Shannen,” Priestly wrote under a photo of her characters Brandon and Brenda Walsh embracing at their high school graduation. “She was a force of nature and I will miss her. Sending love and light to her family during this dark time.”

Brian Austin Green, 50, also from the original cast, thanked Doherty for her love in his Instagram stories. “Shan. My sister… You loved me through everything. You were a huge part of my understanding of love. I will miss you more than I can handle right now. Thank you for this gift.”

Gabrielle Carteris, 63, who played Andrea Zuckerman, wrote in her post: “So young – so sad. Rest in peace Shannon. I know Luke is there with open arms to love you.”

Carteris referred to her previous Beverly Hills, 90210 Co-star Luke Perry, who died in 2019 at the age of 52 following a stroke. Doherty and Perry remained close even after their role as a couple in the series.

When the cast reunited (minus Doherty) for a RewindCon panel in Chicago in 2016, Perry said, “None of us are up here with Shannen today.”

“In fact, she was a very important part of the success of the program,” he told convention attendees. “She taught me a lot and I’m really glad she was there for me as a scene partner. No matter what problems or whatever anyone said about Shannen, I could always tell them that if she was on the right track and we were doing our job, there were no problems. She was great at what she did.”

After Perry’s death in 2019, Doherty made a cameo appearance on his show Riverdale“It is a great honor for me to honor Luke. Riverdale“The care with which this show honors his memory is beautiful,” Doherty wrote in an Instagram post at the time.

Mark Espinoza, 64, who played Andrea’s husband Jesse Vasquez, wrote: “Another day, another great loss. Far too young to leave this world. Shannen played a witch on Charmed but she was really a warrior and fought like one to survive. To me she will always be #brendawalsh and I will forever be grateful that our paths crossed on this journey. Rest in peace dear Shannen… the night sky is brighter for your presence among the stars. #90210.”

Carol Potter, 76, who played Doherty’s on-screen mother Cindy, added: “Shocked and saddened by the news of Shannon Doherty’s death. What a journey she has been on! Gone too soon. She stayed true to herself throughout and gave us an example of courage and resilience in dealing with her own death. May she rest in peace.❤️🙏”

Doherty died at age 53 after battling cancer for years, her longtime publicist Leslie Sloane confirmed to PEOPLE on Sunday, July 14.

Doherty had her breakthrough in the role of Brenda Walsh in 90210 from 1990-1994.

The late actress previously spoke to PEOPLE in August 2019 about rekindling her friendships with her co-stars on the show, addressing long-standing rumors of alleged feuds with her co-stars before she left the series in 1994.

“I’ve felt misunderstood my whole life. The only difference is that I’m okay with it now. But there were moments when we could talk about things,” Doherty explained at the time.

“Someone had a problem with me being late, but maybe they didn’t know I was late because my dad was in the hospital, or maybe because I was in a terrible marriage. I didn’t tell them about it, or I wasn’t asked. I’m not saying it was all a misunderstanding, but a big part of it was a misunderstanding,” she added.

Doherty recalled a conversation with her colleagues to sort out their problems when they reunited on the Fox series BH90210 in 2019.

“It was very interesting to have those conversations … and really understand each other as adults this time,” she said. “We never sat down and said, hey, let’s talk about this. It was just like, we’re adults, we’re in a different place. You kind of start over, but you start closer to each other.”
