Lily Allen remembers the moment she took “petty” revenge on an A-list celebrity early in her career when she was managed by Elton John’s company.

The 39-year-old British singer-songwriter, who celebrated her five-year anniversary of sobriety in April, said she was invited to John’s house in the south of France to “get sober for a few weeks.”

“And while I was there, I got a call from someone who was very famous at the time, asking me if I could perform at a charity event they were involved in; she asked me to sing a song with her friend, a musician,” Allen said in a new episode of her BBC show “The 40 Years of Music.” Miss me? Without mentioning the person’s name, Allen described the woman as “quite a bit older than me and much more famous and successful.”

After Allen told the couple that she didn’t think she would have time to rehearse because she was in the South of France, she remembered the woman telling her not to worry, they would fly over and rehearse with her there.

“They come to the south of France, they arrive and it’s late afternoon and she says, ‘I think you should sing ‘The Sound Of Silence’ (by Simon & Garfunkel). And I thought, ‘Ooh, I don’t know, I really don’t want to do that – that’s outside my comfort zone.’ And she has the right momentum,” said the “Smile” singer.

Allen explained that she then suggested singing Frank and Nancy Sinatra’s 1967 version of “Somethin’ Stupid.”

“I said, ‘Listen, I’m going to go downstairs with your boyfriend and we’re going to practice the song and then we’re going to come up and sing it for you and see what you think about it,'” the Grammy-nominated artist continued, adding, “She grabbed my arm and said, ‘If you think I’m going to leave you alone with my damn boyfriend, you’re wrong.'”

Allen continued, “And I just thought, ‘I’m stuck and you’ve tricked me.’ But I just thought, ‘I’m going to keep this feeling to myself and I’m going to remember it and get you back one day.'”

Allen’s podcast co-host and childhood friend Miquita Oliver noted with a laugh that taking someone into another room was Allen’s way of doing things “back when (she) wanted to be with someone.”

The “Not Fair” singer argued that “I did not find her boyfriend remotely attractive and she was – and still is – incredibly beautiful and therefore should not have felt remotely threatened.”

A few weeks after the charity event, Allen was asked at an awards ceremony if she would accept a “prestigious award.”

After happily accepting the award, she was asked if there was anyone she would like to present the award to.

“And I was like, ‘What time of the event is this award being given out?’ and they said, ‘It’s the second to last award.’ And I was like, ‘There’s no way this person is going to be able to hold it together for that long, and if I can stay sober, then they have to present me with the award while I look flawless and brilliant and they look totally wasted.’ And it f*cking worked!” Allen exclaimed.

“The front page of the newspapers the next day said: ‘So-and-so is a total mess’ and then there were pictures of me and my award.”

Allen acknowledged that her behavior was “particularly petty,” clarifying that she really likes the person now and that this moment was “a particularly bad phase that we were both going through.”

“At least from my side, everything is forgiven,” she said.
