Death of MJ Daniels, Southern Miss player: Laurel teenager has to pay bail

Sixteen-year-old Nytavion Shaw is being held without bail for the June 11 shooting death of Marcus “MJ” Daniels, a football player at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Daniels, 21, was shot while sleeping in his car outside an apartment complex on U.S. 49 in Hattiesburg.

Shaw, of Laurel, is the fourth teenager charged as an adult with felony counts of conspiracy to commit armed carjacking. Bail on that charge is set at $30,000.

His voice was barely audible as he stood before Hattiesburg Municipal Judge Gay Polk-Payton and told her he did not understand what it meant to be denied bail.

Shaw did not have a lawyer, so Polk-Payton said the public defender’s office would assign him one.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for the next few weeks to present details of the investigation and examine Shaw’s alleged role in the murder.

Following an investigation into Daniels’ death by Hattiesburg police, officers arrested 18-year-old Orlando May and 16-year-old Samir Green, both of Hattiesburg, and 17-year-old Allen Marcus Gardner of Houston, Texas, on June 14.

Like Shaw, Green and Gardner were charged as adults. They will be held without bail in the Forrest County Jail after their first court appearance on Monday. Both were charged with felony assault and attempted armed auto theft. May was also charged with felony fleeing and two counts of auto theft.

It is unclear whether there will be preliminary hearings for May, Green and Gardner because Judge Brian Bledsoe, who oversaw their initial court appearances, did not allow the media to attend.

Daniels, a graduate of George County High School, transferred from the University of Mississippi to Southern Miss. A funeral for Daniels was planned for Saturday in Lucedale.
