Famous bridge from Netflix’s “Sex Education” nominated for award

The Tintern Wireworks Bridge, made famous by the Netflix series Sex Education, and civil engineering projects in Lydney Harbour have been nominated for an award. 12 projects from the South West have been selected for the award and the public can have their say on which project receives the award.

The Lydney Harbour and Tintern Wireworks Bridge restoration and remediation projects were selected from dozens of entries across the South West for an online vote. Both projects are competing with others such as the Parsons Tunnel Rockfall Shelter Project in Devon and the Avonmouth and Severnside Ecology Mitigation and Flood Defence Project in Bristol.

The Tintern Wireworks Bridge, made famous by the Netflix series Sex Education, required extensive repairs to secure its long-term future. A £2.2 million project by Gloucestershire County Council, AtkinsRéalis, Volker Laser and Monmouthshire County Council has carefully integrated modern engineering techniques into the bridge’s historic fabric. This sensitive refurbishment aims to extend the life of this iconic structure for another 120 years.

The restoration of 200-year-old Lydney Harbour, transforming the historic site into a safe and navigable harbour, was also shortlisted. This complex project, delivered under time pressure, required the removal of six metres of silt and the rehabilitation of the sea gates. Jackson Civil Engineering carried out the £2.1 million project for the Environment Agency with support from Centregreat Engineering, JD Marine and KingLifting.

The ICE South West People’s Choice Award, sponsored by AECOM, is an annual initiative of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West, offering the public the opportunity to find out about their favourite civil engineering projects in the region and vote for them in a free online poll.

Miranda Housden, Regional Director of ICE South West, said: “The ICE South West People’s Choice Award is a fantastic way to showcase civil engineering to the public and recognise the civil engineers who are working to improve our communities.”
