The “Acolyte” star responds to the toxic backlash from his fans with a song

The Acolyte has quickly become one of the most controversial war of stars projects Disney has released so far. The show has sparked debates ranging from continuity errors to pronoun usage, and has encouraged a certain segment of fans to denigrate the show with unfortunate rhetoric regarding race and gender. In response to the backlash The AcolyteAmandla Stenberg has released a new song and music video addressing the controversy.

Stenberg, who plays both Osha and Mae in the show, released the song via her Instagram account with the caption, “Happy Juneteenth. And to those who are flooding me with unbearable racism – since it took me 72 hours on my laptop to make this song and video, you have 72 hours to respond. And I expect a choreography!” The song begins with a reference to the viral clip of her 2018 performance at The Daily Show with Trevor Noahwhere she said, “making white people cry was actually the goal” while promoting her film The hate you give. ” Trevor asks what I want to say to people. I say the goal was to make white people cry. If they could take one thing away, what would it be? I say empathy. Ooooo, that’s why they’re mad at me?

The showrunner of “The Acolyte” reacts to the backlash

The criticism of The Acolyte reached its peak after the third episode, titled “Destiny,” was released. The episode sparked controversy among fans after it was revealed that twins Osha and Mae were raised by a coven of witches, although the way the twins were conceived remains a mystery for now. In the episode, mother Aniseya, played by Jodie Turner-Smith, explains that the twins have no father and that she was the one who created the twins. The revelation angered fans who believe it is detrimental to Anakin’s story, as in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. It also led to some uncomfortable discussions online regarding gender and sexual orientation.
