The RB duo of the Michigan State football team could cause surprises in 2024

Jonathan Smith did everything he could this offseason to improve the Michigan State football backfield. The 2023 season was an absolute disaster because the offensive line struggled so much. Jalen Berger didn’t have the best year and Nate Carter was held back in the trenches by this game.

With Berger entering the transfer portal along with Jaren Mangham, Smith had to enter the portal to complement Carter in the backfield.

Smith targeted a handful of transfer running backs but landed on UMass’ Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams, who had a 1,000-yard season in 2023. He broke out last year with the Minutemen and now joins a completely new Michigan State backfield.

And even though Nate Carter rushed for 798 yards, which was below people’s expectations, he showed flashes of ability in a season where the offensive line was abysmal.

Entering the 2024 season, the offensive line looks much improved, and the Spartans boast a backfield that totaled over 1,800 rushing yards last year. This running back duo is overlooked by just about everyone, and that will look silly in late September or October when they form one of the most improved rushing attacks in the Big Ten.

Granted, the running game can’t get much worse than it was a year ago, but I would be shocked if the Spartans don’t have a 1,000-yard rusher (I’d guess Carter) and another player that gets over 500-600 yards this season.
